Here’s what I am meditating on today as I contemplate my milestone birthday on Wednesday.
“Even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.” Isaiah 46: 4 (ESV).
“Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent.” Psalm 71: 9 (ESV).
“I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you. “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God and there is none else. And my people shall never again be put to shame.” Joel 2:25-27 (ESV).

In 2018, when I was drafted to run for mayor of Nashville, a framed copy of Micah 6:8 hung in my office:
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”
It still hangs in one of the bedrooms in my home.

We have an everlasting reason for hope.
Isaiah 9 isn’t just a Christmas passage—it’s a living word for right now. In a world that feels unstable, this promise still holds:
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
